The San Diego Natural History Museum has always been a proactive leader in the preservation and conservation of the plants, animals, and environment of our region.

In the 1920s, members of the San Diego Society of Natural History became concerned about the number of shorebirds that were being killed for sport. Staff, volunteers, and local community members became actively involved in conservation efforts to protect these shorebirds. This sign was erected in Mission Bay by members of the Gene Stratton Porter Boys’ Club on February 5, 1927, making it against city ordinance to shoot the birds while helping to create awareness about the birds’ declining numbers.

To learn more about the birds of our region, please check out the San Diego County Bird Atlas from your local library or purchase it from the Museum Store.
