The Yuma Myotis (Myotis
yumanensis) bat can often be seen flying over ponds just over the water’s
surface as it hunts for mosquitos, moths, and mayflies. Like the other bats of Torrey Pines State Park, they are nocturnal
and mostly active during sunset and at night.
The loss of rivers, ponds, and lakes from drought threaten this
bat’s way of life. However, the Yuma Myotis feeds on insects considered
agricultural pests and are important in controlling these in agricultural areas.
