The tiny Ruby-crowned Kinglet (Regulus caléndula), or Reyezuelo de rojo in Spanish, flits from tree to tree looking for insects hidden in the leaves and branches. It nests in mountain forests farther north and visits San Diego only during migration and winter.

Did you know? Although the bird is named the Ruby-crowned Kinglet, you can only spot the ruby “crown” on a male when he gets excited and flashes it, usually at other kinglets; otherwise he keeps it completely hidden.
