The Gray Fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus), or Zorra gris in Spanish, is native to California and the western United States. It is commonly found in mixed woodland, chaparral, riparian, and shrub habitats as well as urban environments like canyons and suburban backyards.

The Gray Fox does well on the margins of some urban areas despite habitat loss to fragmentation and urban development. In the arid regions of the chaparral it will consume insects and plants and is very useful to farmers for eating barnyard rodents and critters.

Did you know? The Gray Fox is the only member of the canine family that can climb trees. It will climb trees with its strong paws and long claws in order to escape predators or ambush prey.
