Both migratory and nomadic, the Band-tailed Pigeon (Patagioenas fasciata), or Paloma de collar in Spanish, is California’s only native large pigeon and can be seen year round in San Diego’s mountains.

Feeding largely on elderberries and acorns, Band-tailed Pigeons frequent oak woodlands where these staple foods are more numerous. In spite of the size of the acorns and their sharp tips, Band-tailed Pigeons gulp them down whole.
